BUY THIS CAR TO DRIVE TO WORK! DRIVE TO WORK TO PAY FOR THIS CAR!!

I wasn't that crazed about this one until I saw it live. Nothing compares to tons of Metric fans singing that line along with Emily.

"That's entertainment, when the cameras roll"

It grew on me, definitely. It's pretty catchy once you get into it. I bet it's amazing live.
=)

Wow I was just going to shout those lines but Joey did it for me!!!

This song is WICKED live. I had an obsession with it a few years ago and didn't stop listening to it for weeks... the lyrics, the melodies, EVERYTHING about it is AMAZING. I was so sad to see it dropped from the set-list from the fall tour to this spring tour.

Emily doing her whole jumping thing while she plays the crazy synth-part with both fit is always so AMAZING BAGSHGHFG.
On the album version it sounds like she's singing the synth part she plays live, because it sounds breathy, but she's never sang it live. I wish she did.

Here's an older version that I almost love as much as I love the album verison. Those alternate lyrics, ".. of course they do... but they're ugly, and soon you'll be UGLY TOOO!" it sounds like emily's voice is a creepy halloween voice when she sings 'ugly too' in that video.

They also played it at the VMA's in '09 and there's an awesome bootleg of it if you've heard it, and at the end of Handshakes she sings, "You wanna get in, you gonna get out... but we don't... 'cause we kiss assssssssssss...... we kisssss ASSSSS"
it's so great :D XD

both feet **

I need them to play this Wednesday night. I think I may have told the story here before. But when I saw them last summer this guy who looked like a mercenary or something was tripping out on hardcore drugs and looked like he was possessed by the devil, and was saying stuff to my friend. And I got really scared for her. And this all happened during Handshakes. So Handshakes=fear and panic for Briggins. This needs to change.

lmao XD oh gee. well i'll be surprised if they throw it in the setlist.. they'll probably keep it the same as they have for these past dates they've played in the past few weeks. we can always hope though ! (although i'll be majorly jealous if they play it for you guys and they didn't play it for me ! D: )

I actually was looking at a job that was about an hours' commute from my house for May and June...which got me to thinking "Well, I'd need a car in order to get there...maybe I should really be getting one soon instead of spending my money on traveling to music festivals..."
And then, like the voice of reason I heard Emily pounding into my brain "BUY THIS CAR TO DRIVE TO WORK, DRIVE TO WORK TO PAY FOR THIS CAR!" and I realized the wrongfullness of my ways. Thanks Emily Haines for once again using your lyrics to dispense useful life advice!

But as for "Handshakes" itself, I totally agree with everyone else that it's one of the most fantastic live songs I've ever seen. I was actually SO surprised when they played it in October, but it was ecstatic surprise for sure :) Once again, really like the lyrics. And the sarcasm (I LOVE SARCASM) in Emily's voice at "Everybody loves you baby...of course they do."

Every time I partake in Metric Monday I just love whatever song we talk about even more. Thanks Briggins!
