I love this song. Like all Metric songs haha. I love how high Emily's voice is. And I love the "You leave your eyes there..." part.

But perhaps ya'll can help me with a slight problem involving this song: So I have this friend (who happens to be quite the druggie... but that's beside the point) who has a tendency to just kinda take a line from songs and assume it the title (i.e. she called Calculation Theme "Your Ghost Will Ask My Ghost" for the longest time, she calls Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley "Bad News", etc. She also won't know what song you're talking about if you use the real name... ugh. This bothers me to no end). She calls Hardwire "The Pot Smoking Song" and I... don't get it. I mean, there's the line about smoke. But I don't think there's any marijuana references, is there? Or am I just being dense?

LOVE IT.
Favorite line (I think): "You are everything, you are nothing at all."
I just love the song over all.

This is one of my favourite Metric songs. Top 5 for sure. Love Emily's vocals in it, I think it is one of her strongest and best sounding vocal parts. Just the pitch, the pronunciation, and pronoun use. (I just wanted to say something else starting with P at the end there).

Although sometimes the drums through me off because they sound like Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2 at times.

Also love Jimmy's vocal part. A song that has male and female vocal parts that work so well together like that are my fav.

@Joey
Hardwire is an ancient Canadian term for pot smoking.
Not really.

you know how when you listen to an album a lot you go through phases of songs... like the first week 'Hardwire' was my favourite, the next it was 'Raw Sugar', then 'On the Sly'...

well, i guess i loved Hardwire for the awesome part immediately following Jimmy's vocals where the synthesizer is going up and down and you feel like you're going through a tunnel filled with neon disco lights and crazy drug-fuelled dancers inviting you to join them...
billiant! xx

I agree, the vocals (both by Emily and Jimmy) are amazing in this one. It makes me wish Jimmy sang/would sing more. Emily's voice is very sweet, the opening notes for example are superb, but it still has an edge at some parts. And it's breathy! I LOVE when she sings breathy-ly (yes, it's a word now).

Hilary I love your description of the synth part! I can totally see that haha.

Haha Briggins. Canadian slang is just awesome, eh?

But seriously Joey, I think she'd call it the "Pot Smoking Song" because of that part in the chorus. It's not (as many online lyric sites seem to think) "Stay, smoke is gone", it's actually "Stay smoothly stoned, postpone the morning / Though we both see it coming we won't run".

I used to have no idea what the actual words there were and just sang it phonetically, until one day a friend of mine said something about it. I went home and looked through my the booklet with my "Grow Up And Blow Away CD" and saw the page of notes/adapted lyrics for "Hardwire" (there it was changed to "hotwire" actually) and just fell in love with the lyrics all over again. I think that's awesome imagery..."smoothly stoned"... Also love "You are everything, you are nothing at all", "Why'd we walk a broken line of minus signs", "I can see you happy in the shadows I despise", "Let the silence settle in our bones" and "Daylight writes a new line (maybe light?) on you".

I wish I could sing this song with people all the time. I'll have to try to initiate this sometime...

I agree with Briggins.

Alex:
I always thought it was smoke largely cause I looked it up online. Maybe I should stop finding my lyrics via the internet.
Thanks for clearing that one up =)

Great song, and I think it's a bit underrated too. Emily's voice is perfect here, of course! It sounds different from other songs, for some reason. Or maybe that's just me... Anyway, I obviously love it to bits. I think my favourite lyrics are:
* "I can see you happy in the shadows I despise"
* "You are everything you are nothing at all"
* "Let the silence settle in our bones"

Many sites have this as lyrics:
"Stay focused on the first boring morning though we both see it coming, we don't run"
;)
