This song sucks.
No, totally kidding. I have a line from it tattooed on me so of course I think it RULES!!!!!!! Everything about it is an epic win. Emily's voice is soft and sensual yet powerful, the synth solo or whatever at the end is AAAAAAMMMMMAAAAZZZZZIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGGG, and the lyrics are deep and well thought out. This is probably my favorite instrumental by Metric. Everything about it rocks hardcore. You can just feel the emotion of the music. Love love love love love it. Also, "Behold the fishnet slut tonight" is an absolutely kick ass way to start out the song!!!!!!!
Favorite lines: "I can't feel a thing, my dreams are so tight" "If I get too close, wake me up, remind me softly to go. If I forget won't you wake me up, remind me not to feel a thing, keep the dream tight..."
AHHHHHHH I just got my new iPod. HR is totally gonna be the first song on there. I'm like horny for it. I wanna listen SO BAD. I've missed my music =(
I hope the new iPod means you're still coming to Lolla!
But yes, Hustle Rose. I'm not quite as in love with it as many of my Metric-loving friends are - two of my good guy friends especially love this song. I know a lot of people like it, but it seems to be a male favourite at least amongst the people I know. The first few times I heard it I'd skip it just because I didn't have the patience for all of the initial repetition. Now I know it's worth waiting even for the sustained instrumental synth parts.
I remember the first time I went to a club I truly understood "sardine nightclub". And when you get lost in that crowd you can imagine having come there alone, and "if you're looking for something lifelike / hit a sardine nightclub / if every surface you touch is cold / never go home" took on new meaning. And of course, "I can't feel a thing, my dreams are so tight" is lyrical beauty.
There's no doubt in my mind however that Hustle Rose is the Holy Grail of all live Metric performances. I would LOVE to see this one live more than I can even imagine. It would be the most amazing extended performance, I imagine. I love each individual instrument's part in this song as well.
I used to skip it too, actually. But then I came to my senses.haha Emily's voice is glorious in this one. "If you're looking for something life-like/ Hit a sardine nightclub" delivery is one of my favorite ever. I can't really explain why, but to me it really does sound as perfect as it gets. I also love this bit: "You could throw me a bone/ If I get too close you wake me up/ Remind me softly to go". Oh and instrumental part is absolutely brilliant! =D
I'm with Joey on this one in terms of how much it sucks.
I'm not sure where this ranks in my Metric favourites list, but top 5 for sure. I love the whole song. Although the repetition can drive me crazy sometimes, but I think thats because I'm just so excited for what comes later on in the song. I love the lyrics throughout, especially the keep the dream tight part. I'm so glad they chose to put that line on their Yellow Bird Project t-shirt.
Its one of those songs that if you're standing waiting for the bus around a group of people they are going to think you are crazy or have some form of disorder since it is sort of impossible to not move to this song.
I really hope they play this one in Halifax, I just may go all fanboy the entire song. Well thats bound to happen all show.
Like LazyD, it took me a little while for me to really enjoy this song. It's actually one of my favorites now. I really, really love the heavy use of the synths. Also, I just really love the music of this song. I like how it starts of so synthetic with the synths. but then it ends very basic with just guitar and piano. But there is one single line that is sung that just kills me: "I can't feel a thing, my dreams are so tight".

Holy FUDGE! This exact same thing happened to me--AT A METRIC SHOW! Hahaha. We were all waiting for them to come out, my friends and I, and we were slowly getting squished more and more together. Somehow Hustle Rose got brought up (we were probably wishing out loud for it to be played that night) and then my friend sang the "sardine nightclub" line, and we were like WHOA revelation.
For me, Hustle Rose has always been good, but not amazing-holy-blow-my-brains-out-awesome, which I find a lot of people are like about it. I know a fair few people who love Hustle Rose to bits, but again for me it's just been a pretty great song, nothing to die over. However it IS growing on me, and it IS pretty fucking amazing live, I'm so glad to say I've seen it before it got dropped from their set lists.
Emily's helicopter move during the instrumental part is so great XD Plus I like to see Emily moving around the stage and just doing whatever since she doesn't have to sing!
