• Ittssss Metric Monday! The day of the week where we focus on one Metric song and talk about what we love about it, what our favourite line is from it, what we don't like about it, etc.

    Song in focus:
    Help I'm Alive

I must say I didn't fall in love with it immediately, but when I finally 'got' it, I was completely surrendered! I think it was the acoustic version that did the trick. It's breathtakingly beautiful (the delivery of the first line floors me every single time). Plus after their Haiti performance, it's just gained a new meaning and more depth too.
The whole song, actually, is very much an anthem to me now.
And it's a great way to start 'Fantasies' too.
=)

Oh good god gravy biscuits, 'Help I'm Alive'! Don't mean to personify a song, but this song and I have been through a lot. There was definitely a point when I hated everything about it, but now I absolutely love everything about it. I really love the drums......yeah. :)

"I think it was the acoustic version that did the trick."

I'm with you on that one. I didn't really like the song until my local DJ played the Plug In, Plug Out version.

Duuuuuuude, the acoustic version is fantastic!!!! I do prefer the acoustic of Gimme Sympathy, tho.

I can listen to this song over and over and over and over and I don't get sick of it. I remember when I first heard it I thought it would be one of those songs that only I liked but all of my friends (that are cool enough to like Metric, anyway =] ) became just as obsessed as soon as I played it. I especially love the "If we're still alive, my regrets are few..." part. I have this dance that I do to it. It's really embarrassing, like everything I seem to do, but it feels really natural. Wow I'm a weirdo.

I remember on a different string, Alex (I think it was Alex, anyway, and I'm too lazy to go look so please correct me if I'm wrong) said something about how she thought GGG is gonna be Metric's "breakthrough" hit. I felt that way about Help I'm Alive largely cause it seemed for a while like everyone, even those I knew hadn't heard of Metric before, was listening to it. Needless to say I was wrong but meh.

"It's really embarrassing, like everything I seem to do, but it feels really natural. Wow I'm a weirdo."

hahahaha you're not, trust me. There's a certain thread on page 3 that would make you feel better about your so-called 'weirdness' though. Many embarrassing confessions (mostly mine actually). haha
;)

"Many embarrassing confessions (mostly mine actually)"

Well, I'm pretty sure I've had a few too. hahaha! Nah, you're right, it's mostly you. lol :P

Haha yeah Joey! Emily once quoted the key to happiness (as she's discovered it) in an interview, something that I've adopted as kind of a mantra: "Only hang out with the people you like. I figured that out and it changed my life." Clearly you should adopt "Only hang out with the people who are cool enough to like Metric" haha. But in all seriousness, dancing to Metric music is cool no matter what. And you're right, when 'Help, I'm Alive' was leaked suddenly all of my friends could at least recognize Metric; it kinda was their breakthrough song as of now at least. It was me who said GGG will be the biggest mainstream success (good memory!), and I still stand by that.

OH MY premonition right now. I'm just going to straight up call it, but I bet CTV will play 'Gold Guns Girls' at some point in their Olympic coverage as part of a montage/feature etc. when female Canadian athletes win gold. So those of you in Canada, wait for it because I bet it's actually going to happen.

But to Help, I'm Alive...

Oh dear you're all going to hate me but I would not say this is even close to one of my favourites. I just can't ever fully immerse myself in it, I find the change from the "beating like a hammer" part to the "if you're still alive" part too disconcerting! It still throws me off a bit, even after like a hundred listens at least. I just thought 'Fantasies' had so much more to offer; I also got tired of them always playing 'Help, I'm Alive' on every TV appearance they made. Every time I'd hope they were going to play a different song, the the lights would go up and Emily would be there with the tambourine and I'd be like "Nope, it's this one again".

There are a lot of things I do like about this song though, don't get me wrong. I'm with Ariel on the drums, they're fantastic (yay Joules!). I always find myself tapping out the drum rhythms when the song is playing. I also think the lyrics are excellent, very apropos for Haiti as Alissa said but also in general. Who can't agree with "If my life is mine, what shouldn't I do?" More Emily wisdom to live by :)

The acoustic version though? Beautiful. My favourite favourite FAVOURITE version is the one Emily is playing on the video about her sojourn into Argentina. Absolutely love everything about it. I remember seeing/hearing an interview where she mentioned that that take on it was kind of like a few different songs combined, and that she hoped to develop the parts she left out into songs in their own right. I love the chord progression that's in that one instead, where the "if we're still alive" part is in the actual release. I wish I could figure out those chords on the piano myself!

Yikes that was long. Sorry everyone!

Oh my God. Love that quote. It's officially in my Facebook quotes. I think I'm going to write a blog about it too... That's how desperate I am to not write this anthropology paper.

I started reading your confessions but there were like 108 long posts and I have a short attention span so I stopped. They were interesting though... I think. I don't know. I'm so frazzled.... AHHHHH!!!!!! *head explodes*

So anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if they used GGG in Canada too. Sadly, here in the states we'll probably get "Party In The USA" and I'll blow my brains out... except that just happened. So I'll... cut my arm off??? instead.

(BTW, for those who are wondering, I'm talking via my esophogus... or by playing my lungs like bagpipes. However you choose to imagine headless me talking)

ZOMG. ARGENTINA VIDEO=ORGASMIC. Sweet Buddha. Omg. Omg.

And the drums are amazing.

And no more energy drinks for Joey.

Hahahahahahahahaha oh my. Oh my. "Playing your lungs like bagpipes"? That is possibly the most vivid mental image I've ever had. Go easy on the Redbull, okay? But I understand the paper stress. That will be me Thursday night before my two HUGE exams. Good luck!

Also, that quote is definitely in my Facebook collection already. Good call adding it in! :)

Bleh, this is my second least favourite Metric song to GGG. I just think the lyrics are kinda bland and the song doesn't really get anywhere.

It's Wednesday and I fail, but I'm going to put in my two cents anyway :P I fell in love with HIA as soon as I heard it, and then overplayed the heck out of it, and then started hearing it everywhere and people I knew were like "Yeah I love that hammer song!" and I started getting annoyed and it ruined the song for me. Now I barely listen to it.

I like the remixes I have of it though, and I really liked the Haiti performance but in general it's defintiley not my favourite:P
